چکیده

254 Iranian Journal of Kidney Diseases | Volume 3 | Number 4 | October 2009 addition, the pathological process in the affected pediatric cases is owing to the acute obstruction from melamine crystal that is unlikely to cause proteinuria. Therefore, the rational for screening for proteinuria in pediatric cases exposed to melamine is not supported. Some limitations of this work should be noted. First, this is a bioinformatics study that still requires further in vitro and in vivo confirmation. Second, there are some new information on uric acid crystallized melamine in urine, but it is not observed in all cases and is not studied in this work due to lack of basic information on its structure.

Cardio-renal cachexia syndromes (CRCS): pathophysiological foundations of a vicious pathological circle

Cardio-renal syndromes (CRS) are defined as disorders of the heart and kidney whereby acute or chronic dysfunction in one organ may induce acute or chronic dysfunction of the other. CRS have been classified into five categories, where types 2 and 4 represent respectively chronic cardio-renal and chronic reno-cardiac syndromes. In these conditions, the chronic disorder of either the heart or kid...

Detrimental role of humoral signalling in cardio-renal cross-talk

In critically ill patients, any acute organ injury is associated with a sudden change of circulating factors that may play a role in distant organ dysfunction through a complex cross-talk. In this issue, Virzì and colleagues discuss the relevance of humoral signalling between heart and kidney, focusing on type 1 and type 3 cardio-renal syndrome. We herein review the mechanisms of heart-kidney c...

Cross-talk between the liver, heart and kidney - another piece in the puzzle.

We have known about the hemodynamic changes and renal failure in cirrhosis since the 1950s [1]. In 1956, Hecker and Sherlock described the clinical course of nine patients with severe liver disease and renal failure with an increase in urea, oliguria and hyponatremia combined with a decrease in the systolic blood pressure [2]. e condition is now classed as hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) a term that...

Cardiorenal syndrome in acute decompensated heart failure.

Renal dysfunction is highly prevalent in patients with heart failure. Furthermore, worsening renal function in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF), the so-called cardiorenal syndrome, impacts short and long-term morbidity and mortality. In recent years, more evidence has surfaced from clinical trials and heart failure registries that a complex cross-talk between the kidney an...

Mechanical ventilation and lung-kidney interactions.

I t was not so long ago that the term “pulmonary-renal syndrome” was synonymous with the combination of immune alveolar hemorrhage and rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis caused by rare conditions such as Goodpasture’s disease and Wegener’s granulomatosis. Recent elucidation of the pathobiology of critical illness has led to a more basic mechanistic understanding of the complex interplay bet...
